Community Forum Presents Camp Wolf Gap

The Community Forum Invites You to Attend

Presentation and talk on The Forgotten History of Camp Wolf Gap, Shenandoah County’s African American Civilian Conservation Corps Camp 1934-1937.  

The lecture will be given by Rosemary Wallinger, local author and historian.  

The event is free

Location: Back room of the Woodstock Brewhouse.  

The public is invited to attend. 

Shenandoah County is home to Camp Roosevelt, the nation’s first Civilian Conservation Corps Camp, is well known to many here. But few, when asked, have ever heard of Wolf Gap, opened one month later than Camp Roosevelt near Columbia Furnace at what is now the Wolf Gap Recreation Area. Even fewer were aware that it had been African American for all but its first year. The Wolf Gap Project aims to restore to public consciousness this important piece of our history, where hundreds of young black men worked to support their families back home, improve the health of our national forests, and create recreational opportunities that contribute today to the health of our communities and local economy.”

The Community Forum is a group of local citizens who are working to inform and educate our community about events/issues/opportunities in our local area (and sometimes beyond) which affect our community.  It is a non-partisan, free, grass-roots organization which does not require a membership and appreciates community input  for speakers and subjects. Join us on the fourth Saturday of every other month at the Woodstock Brewhouse.
